MATISSE 'THE MASTERWORKS'

Vintage book 'Matisse, The Masterworks' (1989)

Gérard Durozoi tells us the artistic evolution of Matisse, who, despite a conventional legal education, discovers his passion for painting after receiving a gift from his mother during his recovery from an operation.

Despite parental opposition, he moved to Paris in 1891 to study with prominent teachers, including Bougereau and Gustave Moreau.

Hardcover version with 48 full-color plates of this volume, each accompanied by detailed text, illustrate the range of Matisse's works, from the smallest figurative oil paintings of the early 20th century to the almost abstract forms of innovative cut-outs of paper and collages that he produced in his last years.
